Mohammed Sharif Khan Zagar Mengal (Sept 1918 - 2nd June 2009)

Born in September 1918, during the colonial period in Killi Mengal British Balochistan, within a prominant sardar family of the Zagar Mengal tribe, son of distinguished Captain Mir Khan Mohammed Mengal a veteran of world war I.

Mohammed Sharif attended school in Nushki, Pishin & Loralai up to secondary level.

He was then accepted for B.A in higher education at the S.E College Bahawal Pur Punjab, from 1938 to 1941.

During his educational period he was an outstanding player in football, hockey & rugby.

Mohammed Sharif was well known for his focus; determination; power & athleticism

Amongst many sporting victories he won the shotput championships of S.E College Bahawal Pur & Balochistan.

Standing at a handsome height of 6ft with deep blue eyes, a strong build & his famous prominent looks accompanied by his football skills as defender, he was known as “the great china wall” many said it was impossible to get the ball past him. His team were the runners up in the 1939 to 1940 Punjab university's sports tournament.

He also showed feats of his renowned power many a time, famously kicking footballs on the football pitch, straight from his teams goal into the oppositions goal a distance of some 100 to 130 yards.

After his education Mohammed Sharif was offered a number of career paths ranging from British Indian army officer, police officer, air force officer & in educational departments. Being an only child, he decided to stay back to support his family & father who was suffering from ill health at the time. He was also very keen to look after his lands in & around Killi Mengal.

In the 1950’s he joined the building & roads department Balochistan & retired as a sub divisional officer (SDO).

Mohammed Sharif was a devoted muslim but never imposed his beliefs upon others, he often educated people to respect all faiths, cultures & humanity. His motto was "lead by example".

His hobbies were seasonal hunting, looking after live stock & his lands & spending time with his family/friends.

A committed person he saw his children educated & established in professional positions within Pakistan & abroad.

Mohammed Sharif’s close friends & class mates were Brig. Retd.Sardar Abdur Rahim Durrani (Ex-governer Balochistan), Lt Col. Retd. Sultan Mohammed Khan (Ex-provincial minister Balochistan), Major. Rtd. Ghulam Mohammed, Mr F.M Panezai (Ex-assistant commissioner) as well as many other distinguished persons.
